What Are Drum Brakes?

Drum brakes play a pivotal role when it comes to stopping your vehicle. It is an intricate system made of components such as a brake drum, backing plate, brake shoe, and wheel cylinder. A drum brake uses the wheel cylinder to employ pressure on the brake shoes, pressing them against the cylinder-shaped brake drum. This results in the slowdown of the wheels and eventually stops your car. Drum brakes are exposed to an excessive amount of heat, ultimately wearing them out, calling for a replacement.   Self-Applying Features Drum brakes are equipped with a self-applying mechanism. The drum rotation and movement drive one or both brake shoes into the ground making the brakes grip harder, thereby improving your stopping power.
